After half an hour of throwing spells at each other, Simon was sure of two things. One, Mariana was holding back the whole time. And two, the ring wasn’t as much of a help as he thought.

How did he find that out? Well, after Thomas’ taunting before the start of the lesson, he felt he needed to know just how well he would do without it, so he had taken it off. He slipped it back on his index finger when he dropped to the ground to collect his Magidex and his books after the class ended.

“So did you prove to yourself you weren’t cheating,” Mariana whispered in his ear, making him jump out of his skin.

“Yes. It barely makes a difference. Are you happy now?” He got up from the ground and looked down at her.

“Of course I am. Please don’t take it off anymore. It gives me peace of mind that you are well-protected.” She sighed.

Simon searched her eyes for the punchline of whatever bit she was running with, but he found nothing. Instead, she was bouncing on her heels, and she was chewing her lip, her mind already on something else, as she was looking through the window and to the outside training area they had been in yesterday.

“Thank you. For worrying about me,” Simon mumbled.

“I’m starving.” She ignored his words and pulled him by his shirt out of the spells classroom.

Devin was waiting for them in the dining hall at their usual table in the back of the room next to the window. As the two of them sat down next to him with their food, he straightened up.

“Kaira called an hour ago. Her friend is working on the ring already. It won’t take long, so she’ll be flying back tonight,” he informed them.

“Great! I can’t wait to get into a real fight, finally.” Mariana spoke with her mouth half-full.

“Speaking of fights, how did sparring go? Kovács sent me an ominous message earlier,” Devin asked, quickly looking over each of them, searching for injuries.

“What did she tell you?” Simon asked.

Devin hesitated for a second before spilling the beans. “That she hasn’t seen such a power gap between partners before, and that I should be making sure you aren’t hurting each other for real.”

“You mean Mariana doesn’t kill me by accident.” Simon chuckled. “Don’t worry. If she wanted me dead, I wouldn’t be here.”

“That’s not funny, Simon.” She looked up from her plate. Her eyes were threatening to bulge out of their sockets. “When I get my ring back, and if you are wearing your Onyx gear, we should be fine.”

“Simon has been progressing better than any of us expected, nonetheless,” Devin praised him. “It’s going to be fine. I think both Kovács and you, Mariana, are underestimating him. Yeah, compared to you, he might not be shining, but if he wasn’t paired up with you, he would be outshining most of the others in that class.”

Mariana swallowed and nodded.

Simon nodded as well. He hoped Devin was right about this—he wanted to prove himself.
